Grand Prize Winner: Michelle Filling
Her Wedding Story:
Pat and Michelle both lived in the same apartment building two doors down from each other. They had bumped into each other a few times in the elevator and Michelle always thought Pat was cute, but couldn't tell in the midst of a short elevator ride if he was single. Typical of her devotion to her students, Michelle stayed late and wearily got home from work around 10pm. When she got home, she found that the FedEx deliveryman delivered a package to her door that was intended for a neighbor. Michelle walked down the hall and knocked on the door. She internally gasped when the cute man whom she had seen in the elevator opened the door.
He politely asked her how the school year was going. Michelle looked puzzled, as she had forgotten that she had shared any details about her life with the man. Patrick remembered every detail, as he said, "Michelle, right? English professor at Cabrini College." Michelle couldn't believe that he remembered this information, and said, "I'm so sorry I don't know anything about you." Pat pointed to the label on his package and said I'm Pat. That was the end of their first significant conversation.
It took another passing in the hallway before Pat got Michelle's number and asked her on a date. Michelle was hesitant because Pat had two boys from a previous marriage and she had never been married. Soon she realized that she needed to jump heart first into this relationship, because Pat was everything that she had ever dreamed of in a man who madly loved and adored her. Pat introduced her to his sons, and they looked at Michelle and looked at their dad and said in disbelief, "What did you get her, dad?" With that vote of approval, Pat and Michelle knew they could fully proceed with their love story.
After ten months of dating, Pat and Michelle spent a quiet Valentine's Day together cooking dinner at home. After dinner, Pat said he had to tell Michelle something that he had been keeping from her. He said he had actually been lying to her about something. Michelle's heart sank. He said, "You know how when you tell people the story of how we met you always say that the Fed Ex guy delivered my package to your door? Well . . . the reality is, I put that package there," Michelle searched his face in disbelief.
Pat continued, "When I first saw you in the building, I knew I had to meet you, so I put that package there. And once I met you, I knew I had to get to know you better, and then I knew that I had to spend my life with you."
Still in shock that he had been romantic enough to plant the box at her door, Michelle was in greater shock when Pat got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. As her hand shook and tears streamed down her face, Pat placed a beautiful ring that he picked out all by himself on her hand.
Pat and Michelle were married on June 9th, 2012, and will now have their story immortalized in song by IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU composer and lyricist Barbara Anselmi and Brian Hargrove.
Stay tuned to BroadwayWorld for the debut of the original song based on Michelle and Pat's love story, featuring the Original Broadway cast of IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU!
