According to the Hollywood Reporter, INTO THE WOODS will come in at $46.1 plus million for the 4 day weekend. This puts it in third for the weekend box office, behind THE HOBBIT at $54.5 million and UNBROKEN at $47.3 million.

Aside from performing ahead of expectations, the paper reports that it's now the biggest opening ever for a Broadway musical film.

LES MISERABLES enjoyed a $27.2 million opening weekend, and ANNIE $15.8 million. Other recent films like MAMMA MIA! and HAIRSPRAY also opened in the $27 million range, though adjusted for 2014 ticket prices, those two would be just over $30 million for their opening weekends.

Disney's INTO THE WOODS, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, has received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture, comedy or musical as well as nods for Emily Blunt as Best Performance by an Actress Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and Meryl Streep as Best Supporting Actress. Streep also snagged a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) - all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award-winning musical "Chicago" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: OnStranger Tides," helms the film, which is based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics.
