On August 19, 2014, Improv Wars will again hit the Columbus comedy scene with Improv Wars One Night Stand featuring 10 of Columbus' finest improv groups competing for audience laughs. Each group will get seven minutes to show what they've got. Its no holds bared, where there is no format, no rules, and and tons of laughs. As with previous Improv Wars the event will be held at Studio 35, 3055 Indianola Ave., Columbus, OH 43202.
The August 19th show is a prequel to Improv Wars: The Fall Attack in a five week run at Studio 35 beginning September 9th and running every two weeks with the Finale on November 4th. (Sept. 9th, Sept. 23rd, Sept. 30, Oct. 21st, and the Finale Nov. 4) As with the three previous engagements at Studio 35, Improv Wars: The Fall Attack will showcase three to four local improv groups competing for audience laughs and applause. This is an interactive evening where the audience gets to be a part of the show by providing suggestions to give the groups inspiration for their scene. The winning group for each night goes on to the finale on November 4th, competing for the Winner of the Improv Wars: The Fall Attack. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
Improvisational comedy is a growing theater form in Columbus that has its roots in Chicago. While not well known by many, improvisation is growing in popularity in Columbus with over 15 improv groups performing around town. Nationally, Chicago's Second City, I.O. Theater, and The Annoyance Theater and shows such as "Whose Line Is It Anyway" and Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" showcase improvisational theater. Many well known actors got their start as "improvers" - actors such Alan Alda, Betty Thomas, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, and Joan Rivers to name a few.
Improv Wars was started in December of 2011 to promote the growth of improvisation comedy to wider audiences and to provide a professional venue to showcase the talent in Central Ohio.
