Hunter Theater Project's Presents Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA 

Hunter Theater Project's ecstatically reviewed debut production of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya that left Ben Brantley, The New York Times, feeling "shivery, teary-eyed and stunned," with a "career-high performance" from Jay O. Sanders in the title role, has announced its final extension through Sunday, November 18. $37 single tickets and $15 student tickets are available at www.huntertheaterproject.org, or at the Hunter College Box Office at the Kaye Theater (East 68th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues).

The New York premiere of a new translation by Richard Nelson, Richard Pevear, and Larissa Volokhonsky, and directed by Nelson, Uncle Vanya has been described by Peter Marks, Washington Post, as "a heart-piercing production, as sublime as I've ever seen Chekhov performed." Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal, praised it as "successful in every way," going on to write that "Jay O. Sanders scores a decisive triumph in the title role." Finally, Jennifer Vanasco, WNYC, declared, "This is theater at its best. If you haven't understood why people love Chekhov's plays, this is the production that will win you over."

Uncle Vanya features Celeste Arias (Eléna), Alice Cannon (Márya), Jon DeVries (Alexánder), Kate Kearney-Patch (Marína), Jesse Pennington (Mikhaíl), Jay O. Sanders (Vanya), and Yvonne Woods (Sonya).

The creative team includes Jason Ardizzone-West (scenic design), Susan Hilferty and Mark Koss (costume design), Jennifer Tipton (lighting design), and Will Pickens (sound design).

Hunter Theater Project is a new theater venture connecting professional theater productions with Hunter College's students and faculty. Under the leadership of Gregory Mosher, Chair of the Hunter Theatre Department, the Hunter Theater Project supports Hunter's teaching, learning, and research mission by giving dramatic expression to subjects across the curriculum, as well as providing a new opportunity to New Yorkers to access professional, affordable theatrical productions.

This translation of Uncle Vanya was commissioned by and first produced at The Old Globe (Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director and Timothy J. Shields, Managing Director), with generous support from the Jean and Gary Shekhter Fund for Classic Theatre. Uncle Vanya is made possible by a generous grant from Susie Sainsbury and The Backstage Trust.

The performance schedule is Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.
