BBC News reports Barry Humphries, the creator of world-famous character-act Dame Edna Everage, has been made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

"The Australian entertainer did not appear as his comic alter-ego, and explained that 'Dame Edna is bolder and less politically correct than me,'" states the website.  Humphries, who appeared as Dame Edna at the Queen's 2002 celebration, deemed Elizabeth the "jubilee girl" – a phrase which reportedly caught on in the UK.

Dame Edna Everage started her success in Australia and later with London stage shows A Night with Dame Edna, Housewife, Superstar and many other performances for the royal family.  She recently toured parts of American with Dame Edna – Back with a Vengeance! and received the Tony Award for Live Theatrical Event for her critically acclaimed Dame Edna: The Royal Tour.

Humphries/Edna's TV credits include the UK special, "A Night on Mt. Edna" and two seasons of her talk-show "The Dame Edna Experience," which featured guests like Robin Williams, Roseanne Barr, Sean Connery, Mel Gibson and Cher.

Books include "Dame Edna's Coffee Table Book," "Dame Edna's Bedside Companion" and her autobiography, "My Gorgeous Life," which (her website reports) is currently being adapting for the stage and screen.
