The Perperikon Suite is the brand new album by Bulgarian (San Francisco based) modern jazz guitarist Hristo Vitchev. Celebrating his third recording as a leader, and probably his most sophisticated and adventurous work up to date, the impressionistic six-stringer borrows the inspiration for his latest session from the history and mystic of the ancient Thracian civilization.
The music, which is inspired by the spirit and magic of the sacred Thracian city of Perperikon (located on the territory of Bulgaria and dating back to 5000 years B.C.), combines modern jazz, world, fusion, and orchestral elements into a large scale jazz suite in 7 movements. The impressionistic work was specifically written to be premiered by the quintet at their 53rd Monterey Jazz Festival appearance on Sep. 18th 2010.For the recording of the album, Hristo Vitchev's internationally acclaimed quartet consisting of: Brazilian piano sensation and Latin Grammy nomineeWeber Iago, drummer extraordinaire Joe DeRose, and one of Northern California's first call bassists, Dan Robbins, is joined by virtuoso vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Christian Tamburr.
