Howard Scott Gallery is pleased to announce the opening exhibition of Recent Works by the New York City artist Rick Klauber on Thursday, January 28.
Rick Klauber's recent paintings on carpentry shims hover on the wall as lightly as birds on a wire. They seem to breathe color. Shims are shingles often used to level an architectural frame. Here they are exalted via the application of paint and the metamorphic processes of the artist's mind.
Klauber uses the shims as brushstrokes. The wall is the canvas. He paints each shim a single color and then attaches it directly to the wall echoing the shingle's original purpose. Like tesserae in a mosaic the individual shims coalesce into a painting.
Acknowledging several traditions, these paintings feel uniquely current. They emerge at once as timeless and fresh. With the surface, gesture, color and placement of each shim, Klauber pulls meaning out of the ether. These paintings radiate a kind of hard-won serenity, a sense of rightness and natural magic.
Rick Klauber, a native New Yorker, began showing his work when Robert Motherwell sponsored his debut show at Artists Space, NYC, in 1975. Other New York shows include: Oscarrson Hood Gallery, White Columns, Threadwaxing Space and Brenda Taylor Gallery. He was a founding member of the Long Point Gallery in Provincetown, MA, along with Robert Motherwell, Fritz Bultman, and Judith Rothschild. Klauber has exhibited his work in Germany, Hungary and in Vienna, Austria, at Hubert Winter Gallery. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America and the Brooklyn Rail. Klauber's work is included in numerous public and private collections including Witherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC, Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AK, Reading Public Museum, Reading, PA, Ladenburg Thalmann, NYC, and DeBevoise and Plimpton,
