Critically acclaimed singer, guitarist, composer, and bandleader Howard Fishman will perform for one night only at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company on Wednesday, October 27th at 7:30pm, as part of his fall/winter tour. Other tour stops include various locations throughout New England, Upstate NY, and the Mid-Atlantic Region-along with a three-night stand at New York City's Abrons Arts Center, where Fishman will perform each new record in its entirety, on successive evenings and with different ensembles. Additionally, Fishman will release a trilogy of recordings on October 26th, 2010. Recorded simultaneously with vastly different musical palettes, each CD is set against a specific geographical backdrop: New Orleans, LA (BETTER GET RIGHT), Romania (NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS), and Brooklyn, NY (THE WORLD WILL BE DIFFERENT).
Recorded over a period of eighteen months, with overlapping personnel, the trilogy begins with BETTER GET RIGHT, Fishman's love letter to New Orleans, his adopted home when he was a struggling street musician in the mid-90's. Backed by his New Orleans-style brass band, (The Biting Fish), BETTER GET RIGHT is a set of originals interspersed with new takes on traditionals and gospel from the Big Easy repertoire. The music is by turns funky, intimate, dirty, and reverential.
Part two is NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS, an epic song cycle about Fishman's travels in rural Romania. It contains a 20-page booklet of photographs by New York Times travel writer Michael Benanav (Fishman's boyhood friend who accompanied him on the trip), NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS is a musical travelogue filled with stories and adventures as seen through Fishman's unique musical vocabulary. It features what Fishman calls his "Romanian Orchestra," a lush and sometimes ragtag assemblage of strings, horns, accordion, piano, and banjo.
THE WORLD WILL BE DIFFERENT is a self-described "break-up album," set in Brooklyn, NY. An intimate set of songs that essay the dissolution of a passionate love affair, it features primarily Fishman's own vocals, guitar, and piano, backed by sparse bass and drums. THE WORLD WILL BE DIFFERENT is so personal, Fishman considered not releasing it at all.
Often compared to artists like Lou Reed, Beck, The Magnetic Fields, and Jonathan Richman, Fishman brings a punk-like edge to an encyclopedic familiarity with diverse musical forms to create "an irresistible synthesis" (Backstage) that is "something entirely new" (Downbeat). He made his debut at the Algonquin Oak Room in 1999, and has since headlined in major venues both here and abroad, including Lincoln Center, Joe's Pub, The Steppenwolf Theatre, The Pasadena Playhouse, NJPAC, and Le Petit Journal in Paris. He maintains a full-time touring schedule and has garnered a devoted following worldwide.
