Holy Cross Sucks!, a Comedy About the Tragedy of High School, will be presented by Ars Nova (511 W. 54th St.), where it will run from August 31st through October 1st; opening night is set for Friday, September 9th at 8 PM.
Staged by Tony Award-nominated director/choreographer Jeff Calhoun (Brooklyn, Big River, Grease), the show is described in production notes as "a comic journey through those unforgettable years of high school, starring Rob Nash as an ensemble cast that includes the virgin,' 'the homo,' 'the punk,' 'the fat kid,' and 'the slut"...In the spirit of such teen film classics as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Holy Cross Sucks! follows six friends as they navigate those painful, life-defining, and often humiliating years of high school. We're
never as vulnerable and as vicious, as beautiful and as ugly, as
idealistic and apathetic, as vain and as humble as when we're
adolescents...Nash explores these paradoxes with biting humor, insight,
and a killer soundtrack."
Nash has performed internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Montreal Comedy Festival. He has worked with Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres. His
work has been produced at regional theaters including Stages in
Houston, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Carolina Theater in Durham,
VORTEX in Austin, The Cable Car in San Francisco, and Velvet Elvis Arts
Lounge in Seattle, among others."Since opening 2 years ago, some of New York's top
writers, directors and performers have walked through Ars Nova's doors with
ideas and walked out with projects that were ready to be taken to the
next level. Some of those names include Rufus Wainwright, Sandra
Bernhard, John Cameron Mitchell, Jason Biggs, Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy
Sedaris, Paul Rudd, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, The Wau Wau Sisters,
Moises Kaufman, James Lapine, Tony Kushner, Stephen Belber, and Michael
Patrick King. Ars Nova produces theater, comedy and music events,
