The playwright jokes, "I never saw myself writing a holiday play. I'm not particularly into Christmas. The red and green color scheme drives me crazy! Studio C produced my play "Reel Wood" for the Hollywood Fringe Festival this past summer. I loved what they did with it! When they told me they were accepting submissions for a holiday show, I took it as a challenge!"
So, what's "Christmas Caroline" about? "'Well, the play starts innocently enough. We meet Chad and Jackie from Connecticut. They're married and they are hosting a holiday party. The main objective of the party is to do some matchmaking for Jackie's sister, Caroline. Suffice to say, the party doesn't go as planned! Case in point, Caroline arrives to the party in the wake of getting fired from her volunteer job at the "Suicide and Crisis Hotline". She was let go because she attempted suicide during her shift!"
"Christmas Caroline" starts there and escalates into chaos. Crazy as things get, I believe the show has a real heart. Before the show ends, the audience will experience sibling rivalry, sibling love, suicidal behaviors, manic displays... oh, and a newfound appreciation for a classic spice! This is NOT your mother's holiday offering... more like the holiday "love child" of Frank Capra and Pedro Almodovar! Ha!"
Joe Gulla's "Daddy" is set to close the Sixth Annual United Solo Festival in New York the week after "Christmas Caroline" opens. Joe is also the author of "Reel Wood", a huge success at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Joe's "Knock Off!" premiered this past July at Theatre Southwest's "Festival of Originals'. He is also the author of "Garbo".
