Hilary Easton + Company will present its 20th anniversary season with the world premiere of The Constructors, a richly animated evening-length work for five dancers, at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, May 17-20, 2012.
The Constructors, set to original music by Mike Rugnetta and lighting design by Kathy Kaufmann, reflects upon the nature of collaborative experience--chronicling the satisfactions and challenges in the act of “dancing together.” With an adroit choreographic structure, The Constructors presents a series of related kinetic tasks that lead to an increasingly layered and interrelated social fabric. The Constructors continues Ms. Easton’s career-long fascination with the open-ended conversation between performer, work of art, and viewer; the most compelling act of construction is the one established between these three entities.
In celebration of the company’s milestone anniversary, Ms. Easton also will premiere a new solo for herself, The Heart is Like a Toboggan, with costume created by her longtime collaborator, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. The Heart is Like a Toboggan will be performed Thursday and Friday nights only (May 17 & 18).
Thanks to a generous grant from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, a post-performance presentation/dialogue detailing the making of The Constructors with Hilary Easton and the dancers, Alexandra Albrecht, Michael Ingle, Joshua Palmer, Emily Pope-Blackman, and Sarah Young, will take place on Sunday, May 20th at 2pm. This event is free and open to audience members who attended any of the four performances.
Hilary Easton + Company will perform from May 17-20 at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Howard Gilman Performance Space, 450 West 37th Street. Performances begin at 7:30pm, Thursday-Saturday, and 1pm on Sunday. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at smarttix.com or 212-686-4444.
The Constructors was made possible, in part, with support from The Manhattan Community Arts Fund and The Harkness Foundation for Dance.
