Herbert Blomstedt To Return To The NY Philharmonic This February

Herbert Blomstedt will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Grieg's Piano Concerto with Jean-Yves Thibaudet as soloist; Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1; and Dvo k's Symphony No. 8, Thursday, February 28, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, March 1 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, March 2 at 8:00 p.m.

Swedish-American conductor Herbert Blomstedt's recordings of works by fellow Scandinavian Edvard Grieg have received critical acclaim, including from the author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection: Here is a conductor with a real feel for the music, and in his hands Grieg's multi-movement score shows its emotional depth.

BBC Music Magazine wrote of Jean-Yves Thibaudet's 2000 recording of Grieg's Piano Concerto: The colouristic range of Thibaudet's playing (embracing everything but stridency), is a pleasure from first note to last, as are his subtle, often illuminating rhythmic suppleness and his impeccable articulation. The pianist shared his reflections on the concerto with Gramophone magazine in 2016: I know it's a clich , but the first time I went to Norway I could sense the concerto's relation to its country. It is music about nature and landscape . There is real work to be done between the pianist and conductor to ensure such cohesion . it's crucial: there needs to be a unity of shape and dynamics to make the piece truly succeed. Herbert Blomstedt and Jean-Yves Thibaudet collaborated on a 1997 recording of Mendelssohn's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2.

The New York Philharmonic will offer an allotment of free tickets to young people ages 13 26 for the concert on Friday, March 1 as part of Philharmonic Free Fridays.

Single tickets start at $34. (Ticket prices subject to change.) Tickets to Open Rehearsals are $22. A limited number of $18 tickets for select concerts may be available for students within 10 days of the performance at nyphil.org/rush, or in person the day of; valid identification is required.
