Harlem School of The Arts & Actress Tamara Tuni Announce New Musical Based on ALICE IN WONDERLAND  Image

JAZZLAND: in Concert, a new musical inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and set in Harlem, circa the 1930s at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, will begin rehearsals in March, and is scheduled for a limited run at the HSA Theatre, 649 Saint Nicholas Avenue, in New York City. Performances are scheduled for two consecutive weekends, beginning on Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 20.

This reimagined version of Carroll's classic tale is written by actor/producer/director, Tamara Tunie and bookwriter/lyricist/playwright, Charles Leipart, with original music and songs by Leipart and master jazz pianist, Eric Reed. The production is being presented by Harlem School of the Arts, in partnership with Manhattan School of Music and Harlem Stage.

The cast for JAZZLAND: in Concert" will feature students from HSA's theatre program and Harlem Stage's partner schools, with vocal direction by Yolanda Wyns and choreography by Aubrey Lynch II, two of HSA'S senior program directors.

"I am very excited to be working with this extraordinary team of talented individuals and three of the finest arts organizations in the city," said Ms. Tunie. "For me, this is about elevating the need to fund arts education that is accessible to all children."

Casting for JAZZLAND: in Concert will be open to students enrolled in HSA's theatre and acting programs, under the care of Artistic Director Alfred Preisser, and students from A. Phillip Randolph, WHEELS, Bro/Sis Sol, Urban Assembly of Performing Arts, Thurgood Marshall Academy and Opportunity Charter School.

Performances will be held at HSA Theater, 649 Saint Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY 10030, and are scheduled on Friday, May 11 & 18 @ 7:00 pm, Saturday, May 12 & 19 @ 7:00 pm, and Sunday, May 13 & 20 @ 3:00 pm. Ticket prices are $20 (advance purchase), $25 (at the door), and special Student & Senior discounted tickets at $15.
