Happy Ending For Obie-Winner Juliana Francis Kelly's Tale Of Stolen Handlebars

A 2002 Obie-winner for her performance in Richard Foreman's MARIA DEL BOSCO, Juliana Francis-Kelly divides her time between acting, playwriting and doll-making.

As a performer and author, her work has been seen at such venues as P.S. 122, Here Arts Center and The Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, so it's not unusual to see her name printed in The New York Times.

Her most recent mention however, was not for an artistic achievement, but for an unfortunate incident that's an all-to-common occurrence among those who choose to pedal their way about the city.

"I was broke, with about $20 in the bank, but I was happy, "she writes in the Times' Manhattan Diary. "I had just been commissioned to write a play for an Off-Broadway theatre company."

Sadly, the celebration was brief, as when she left the theatre company's tiny office, she found that her bicycle's handlebars were stolen.

"The handlebars were distinctive. It was a no-speed bike, and they were tall and curved like the letter "U" so you could stand and push down hard on the pedals to accelerate."

Unable to drag the vehicle thirty blocks home, she temporarily left it locked to a fence with a note taped above it.
