Gullickson works outside of the assumptions of a specifically western mode of thought with respect to thinking about and creating artwork has led him to explore other cultures, such as Thailand and Japan, and the ways they deal with art, sacred objects, culture, expression and communication.
"The work in this show explores the relationship between material and imagery through patterns and repetition. I am interested in mixing past present and future cultural craft and imagery in a manner which is random and chaotic, while viewed in total express a sense of higher order," says Gullickson. "The paintings are sewn together similar to traditional hand woven wall hanging or rugs are. The rubber coated cement blocks are both mundane yet oddly magical."
Hans Gullickson studied writing, process and performance at School of the Art Institute of Chicago under members of Goat Island Performance Group. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
