Variety is reporting that Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon," the black-and-white drama set in a rural German village on the eve of WWI, received the Palme d'Or from the jury of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. The trade paper also reports that Sony Pictures Classics nabbed the North American rights to the film before the festival.
The Grand Prix was awarded to French helmer Jacques Audiard's tough prison drama, "A Prophet."
Actor Christoph Waltz won the acting prize for his multilingual turn in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." Charlotte Gainsbourg took best actress honors for her performance as a grieving mother in Lars von Trier's "Antichrist," the designated scandale of this year's fest.
86 year old French film veteran Alain Resnais, in competition with "Wild Grass," received a lifetime achievement award from the jury.
