HSA Department Of Art & Design Presents INTERWOVEN Image

The Harlem School of the Arts is the site of a new art exhibition, INTERWOVEN, which features the artwork of husband and wife artists, Sedrick & Letitia Huckaby. The exhibition showcases a total of 16 dynamic pieces of their artwork, (12 works from Letitia and 4 works from Sedrick).

An Artist Talk and a reception will be held on March 14th, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Harlem School of the Arts, located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue.

This unique exhibition presents the couple's work side by side, highlighting their individual styles and their mutual interests. This exhibition weaves the use of quilts and quilt making, the passing down of these hand made heirlooms, and what they represented then and now, to tell a particular aspect of the history of the Black experience in America, more specifically the history of Southern life post-slavery.

Their works are filled with references to the harsh reality of life lived at the edge of impending doom, and yet even in those darkest and harshest of conditions, Black communities could call upon their bare resources to create breathtakingly, beautiful and colorful works of art, which have been handed down from one generation to the other.

Sedrick Huckaby is a native of Fort Worth, Texas. He attended Texas Wesleyan University in his hometown before transferring to Boston University, where he received his BFA, and then to Yale University, where he earned his MFA.

Letitia Huckaby was born in Augsburg, Germany and has always been involved in some form of artistic pursuit from dance to photography. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she received a degree in Journalism. She later obtained her BFA in Photography from the Art Institute of Boston and her Master's from the University of North Texas in Denton.

Sedrick and Letitia Bring distinct storytelling perspectives to their work. This particular exhibition focused on the history of quilts in the Black community. And through their individuality, they have collectively inspired a conversation about the nature and importance of quilting within the greater African-American narrative, which is profound.

INTERWOVEN the artwork of these two extraordinarily gifted artists will be up through May 25. You may call (212) 926-4100 for exhibition hours and for directions. You may also visit http://www.hsanyc.org for more information on the organization and for more on the event, https://bit.ly/2Xu2tG6.
