For the first time since Hamilton opened on Broadway last summer, the Richard Rodgers Theatre is saying "no" to the swarms of hopeful theatergoers in its standby ticket line.
According to Vulture, the venue's staff capped the queue to about 30 people after the box office opened at 10 a.m. this morning, following complaints from the neighboring Marriott Marquis. Hotel security reportedly appeared at 6:30 a.m. to usher a long line of self-described "Hamiltrash" from their property.
"We're very supportive of Broadway and of ticketholders. This is not that," Marriott spokesperson Kathleen Duffy told Vulture. "They're blocking fire exits, emergency exits, and our first priority has to be to the safety of our 2,000 guests."
Signs on the Marriott's walls bans tents, sleeping bags, personal property and people lying on the ground -- all of which have been rampant in the Hamilton standby line. And to get to the front of the line, Hamilton fans have been showing up as early as 7 p.m. the night before and camping out until the box office opens.
When crowds for the musical's #Ham4Ham lottery started blocking traffic on West 46th Street earlier this year, the endeavor moved indoors and online.
No word on whether this new 30-person cap on Hamilton's standby line will become the show's official policy; BWW will keep you posted as soon as we learn more!
