With a 2017-18 national tour and sit-down production in Chicago planned, Broadway's mega-hit HAMILTON may soon head north.
According to The Globe and Mail, preeminent Toronto producer David Mirvish has entered negotiations with HAMILTON producer Jeffrey Seller to bring Lin-Manuel Miranda's 16-time Tony Award nominated musical to Canada.
"There hasn't been a show like Hamilton - and there may not be again," John Karastamatis, Mirvish Produtions' director of communications told the site. "We need to bring it to Toronto, we need people here to see it, and we hope our negotiations are successful."
Though nothing is concrete, discussions currently center around a potential sit-down production, led by an all-Canadian cast.
"Nothing is certain in show business - or any business, I believe," he added. "But I can tell you that we're all over the moon - I don't know what expression to use to really express [Mirvish Productions's] enthusiasm for this show."
As BroadwayWorld reported just today, a new block of tickets to the Broadway production (from January-May 2017) has already sold out, with premium seats now going for $849.
With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamiltonis based on Ron Chernow's biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
HAMILTON is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation's first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now.
HAMILTON's creative team previously collaborated on the 2008 Tony Award ® Winning Best Musical IN THE HEIGHTS.
HAMILTON features scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe, and casting by Telsey + Company, Bethany Knox, CSA.
