Jump-starting New York's Gay Pride weekend, some of the city's most talented dance, drag and theater performers will recreate the scene that started it all - the Stonewall riots. In 1969, gays and lesbians fought back against the persecution of homosexuals, thereby igniting the yearly tradition of the Gay Pride march.
Dancers from the Federation of Ballroom Houses (Voguers), Drag Performers, Sailors and Cast Members from Various Broadway shows such as Hair (including Tony-nominated star Gavin Creel), Wicked and West Side Story will recreate the event on THURSDAY, JUNE 25 @ 6:00 PM
TKTS STAIRS - TIMES SQUARE.
40 years later, the LGBT community is still fighting for equality with the right to marry. Hippies, drag queens and white boys were all present at the Stonewall Bar the night of the police raid, which ignited the riots. Remembering the continued need to fight for equal civil rights, performers will restage this protest in Times Square in an effort to draw attention to this ongoing battle.
LOVE BALL - the official opening night party of NYC's Gay Pride - takes place on Saturday, June 27th at the Nokia Theater, Times Square (1515 Broadway).
