New York's Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director) and Joey Parnes have announced that cast members from the critically acclaimed first national tour of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, now on Broadway at the St. James Theatre for a "Summer of Love" run, will hold a "Be-In" performance to benefit Broadway Impact and help celebrate the recent victory for marriage equality in New York state on Sunday, July 24th at 9:00 p.m. Rockwood Music Hall in NYC (196 Allen Street). July 24 also marks the first day gay couples in New York State can legally wed.
Presented by Thick and Thin Music, the concert will feature songs from HAIR, along with original songs and cast favorites. Tickets are $12 and are available at http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com/. With this "Be-In," HAIR continues its longtime association with Broadway Impact. As previously announced by Broadway Impact co-founder Rory O'Malley at a press conference last week, several same-sex couples from the Broadway community will get married onstage at the St. James Theatre on July 25 immediately following that evening's performance of HAIR. These unions will be among the very first in New York State, following the landmark bill recently passed by state legislators.Winner of the of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, and the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle 2009 awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, HAIR opened on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre to unanimous raves March 31, 2009 and played more than 500 performances before closing on June 27, 2010.
Directed by Diane Paulus, HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The story of a group of young Americans searching for love and peace during the Vietnam era, HAIR is a timeless portrait of a movement that changed the world. Its groundbreaking rock score paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time.The creative team also includes Karole Armitage (choreography), Scott Pask (scenic design), Michael McDonald (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design) and ACME Sound Partners (sound design).
