ABOUT Galt MacDermot AND THE NEW PULSE JAZZ BAND:

The New Pulse Jazz Band was formed in 1979 to respond to requests for music from the score for the movie "Hair". The name of the band came from Galt's friend, singer Larry Marshall, The Cotton Club, who described Galt's music as "Pulse" music.

The key elements of the New Pulse Band originally came together when Galt MacDermot met Bernard Purdie on a demo session in 1964. When Galt needed a bass sub on the HAIR show, he used Wilbur Bascomb, then 17 uears old. Charlie Brown was the guitarist in the HAIR band.

The dynamic musicians make up the key players with Galt when he performs live. In 1979 at the release of the "Hair" movie, saxophonist Allen Won, joined the rhythm section and Galt gave the band a name - New Pulse.

The music of Galt MacDermot and the New Pulse Jazz Band has been described as "soaring, multi-faceted, oozing with rhythm, deft and witty and emotionally powerful."

The New Pulse Jazz Band includes Galt MacDermot - Keyboards, Bernard "Pretty Purdie - Drums, Wilbur "Bad" Bascomb - Bass Guitar, Allen "Wing" Won - Saxophone, John Frosk - Trumpet, Patience Higgins - Baritone Saxophone, Vince MacDermot - Trombone.
