According to CTV Montreal, Quebec entrepreneur Guy Laliberte announced on March 25 that he has put his beloved no-animal circus, Cirque Du Soleil, up for sale.
After 21 years and over 90 millions guests, it is found that Laliberte wants to sell all but 10 percent of his share in the Québec-based company, which is worth about $2 billion. One of his requirements is for the new owner to keep the head office in Montreal, which has over 1,600 employees based there.
Laliberte, Canada's now 11th wealthiest resident, has had major success with his circus. Francois Legault of CAQ noted in a press release Wednesday, "Cirque Du Soleil is a source of pride for all Quebecers. The circus radiates around the globe...Quebec cannot afford to lose a jewel like Cirque Du Soleil."
From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists from more than 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents.
