Guggenheim Announces Summer 2012 Family Programs

Summer 2012 programs at the Guggenheim Museum for families, kids, and teens are presented in conjunction with current exhibitions Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960, on view through September 12, and Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective, on view June 29–October 8. See below for full details on all of the museum's family offerings.

FOR FAMILIES: SUMMER SUNDAY FAMILY TOURS
Sundays, June 24–July 29, 10:30 am–noon
For families with children ages 5–10
Visitors explore the Guggenheim's summer exhibitions through family-oriented tours that incorporate conversation and creative hands-on gallery activities.

June 24: Amazing Abstraction!
Families investigate abstract art of the 1950s in the exhibition Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960.

July 1: Revealing Portraits
This tour acquaints families with portraits in the Guggenheim's galleries.

July 8: Shake it up!
Participants discover different ways that artists capture movement in their work.

July 15: What's the Matter?
From watercolor to wood, gouache to gold leaf, families view different materials artists use to create their vision.

July 22: With a Flick of the Wrist…
Families examine works of art to figure out if an artist has left clues about how a piece was made.

July 29: Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective for Families
This family tour explores the film and photographic works in the exhibition Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective.

OPEN STUDIO
Sundays, July–Aug 5, 12–4 pm
For families with children ages 5–10
Visitors will be able to stop by the Sackler Center's Studio Art Lab and create an abstract work of art inspired by the exhibition Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960.

Museum educators lead creative, interactive projects for visitors that explore exhibition highlights.

FOR KIDS: SUMMERSCAPES ART CAMP
July 16–20, 2012, 9:30 am–4 pm and/or
July 23–27, 2012, 9:30 am–4 pm and/or
July 30–August 3, 2012, 9:30 am–4 pm
For kids ages 8–11
Summerscapes is the Guggenheim's museum educator–led mini-camp that take place each year in July and August. Each of the five-day sessions begins with an exploration of our Frank Lloyd Wright building, Permanent Collection, and special exhibitions. Kids then have time in the museum's art studio for individual and collaborative hands-on projects and to experiment with everything from painting and sculpture to printmaking and collage. Summerscapes concludes with a mini exhibition so children can share their creations with family and friends.

$500 per week, $900 two weeks ($400/$700 for members). Limit is two weeks per child. Includes all art materials, snacks, a family pass, and photos documenting the program. Registration required at 212 423 3637, Mon–Fri, 1–5 pm.

FOR TEENS: TEEN NIGHT AT THE GUGGENHEIM
Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 5–8:30 pm
In conjunction with the exhibition Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective, teens mingle in the Guggenheim galleries and meet artist Rineke Dijkstra and exhibition curator Jennifer Blessing. While talking with teen educators, participants can see the art on view and enjoy music and refreshments. Cosponsored by the Museum Teen Summit, NYC.

Free, registration and RSVP required. Current high-school ID badge must be presented at check-in.

FRAMING THE PHRASE: WRITING IN THE GALLERIES
July 30 and 31, August 2, 6, 7, and 9, 1–4 pm; August 9, 5:30–7 pm
For grades 9–12
Teens explore modern and contemporary art and respond to works featured in the museum's summer exhibitions through in-depth group conversations, sketching, and creative writing facilitated by a professional writer and educator. The program concludes with a reading for family and friends.

STILLSPOTTING NYC: STATEN ISLAND FOR FAMILIES
Saturday, August 4, 2–4 pm
In conjunction with Telettrofono, the fourth edition of the stillspotting nyc program in Staten Island, families are welcome to attend a free event on Saturday, August 4 from 2–4 pm. This family day will include a reading focusing on Antonio Meucci's life and work, art activities, and refreshments. Stillspotting nyc is a two-year project that takes the Guggenheim's Architecture and Urban Studies programming out into the streets of the city's five boroughs.

The Family Activity Pack prompts conversation, provides information about artwork, and offers hands-on activities sure to engage all ages. Permanent Collection Pack also available.

Family Activity Guides provide information and activities for families to explore the Guggenheim on their own.
