Green Space is pleased to offer a diverse roster of new and emerging artists in March. Fertile Ground will present new work by various artists and Take Root will present an evening of work by Taylor Donofrio and Laurie Hockman.
Laurie Hockman's "settled gravity" uses Shakespeare's sonnets to create a world and a character who explores the themes of love, loss, and time's cruelty. Driven by the atmosphere and passion of composer Kayhan Kalhor's "Silent City," the work seeks to capture the imagery and feeling of the poems, making connection between the language, the amplified gesture of the movement, and the immanence of space.
Taylor Donofrio is the Artistic Director and Choreographer of Donofrio Dance Company. She established the company in 2009 after premiering their first work at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens. Taylor received a BA in Dance from Manhattanville College and an Award of Excellence for her performance piece, Automaton. After working with Pucci Plus Dancers and Misnomer Dance, Taylor has since collaborated and choreographed for Not An Original Theater Company, Te IIum Theatre Company, and companies such as CollegeHumor. Donofrio Dance Company's work has been presented at Dumbo Dance Festival 2012, DNA, Triskelion Arts, Movement Research, Manhattanville College, and at CPR. The company was recently featured in Dance Informa magazine.
Laurie Hockman has been creating and performing her own work since 1993. She has danced with Katherine Howard, Malene Lodz, and Trish Doherty, and in collaborations with visual artist Natalie Moore and free jazz musicians Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, David Gould, and David Moss. She is influenced by ideokinetic studies with Nancy Topf and Irene Dowd. She holds a BA in philosophy from Wake Forest University.
FERTILE GROUND is a monthly new works showcase for emerging and established artists now in its 8th season, producing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. This non-curated performance event features five-six choreographers each evening, and includes a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.
