Green Space Presents Take Root with Brush/McGrath (Works) and Brynne Billingsley & Artists ImageGreen Space is pleased to announce a diverse roster of new/emerging artists for its signature programs this May. Take Root will present an evening of work by Brush/McGrath (works) and Brynne Billingsley & Artists on May 18th and 19th, and Fertile Ground showcases the creative output of multiple dance artists on May 20th.

"With a backdrop of the Manhattan skyline twinkling through the tall, dusty windows of a former silk factory, both established and emerging NY choreographers show off their most recent works." -Queens Chronicle

TAKE ROOT, now in its 9th season, cultivates dance of varying aesthetics by producing choreographers' work in a full-length or paired-work evening. This monthly series supports dance makers by providing our venue, Green Space, along with full technical and marketing support to present their work to the NYC public.

This new work expands on Brush and McGrath's previous duet, "A Template for Stasis," which introduced ideas of entropy and disorder. These are normally considered negative concepts, but as systems and patterns dissolve, new conditions are created for new designs. By adding three dancers, Breckyn Drescher, Genna Mattana, and Katie Skinner, the multiplicity of events is raised in increasingly complex ways which would be impossible with only two dancers. The creation of this new iteration of the dance was made possible by the subsidized space program at Mark Morris Dance Group and individual donors.

Brynne Billingsley & Artists presents Felt Shift, a meditation on the internal architecture of thought. Billingsley weaves unpredictable pattern with moments of vulnerability. At points hypnotic, dancers crash through space like waves against a shoreline. A cinematic vision of human strength and resilience, Felt Shift offers a possibility of endless images. Felt Shift will be performed by Amy Larson, Maya Orchin, and Brynne Billingsley with music by Tim Hecker. Felt Shift was commissioned in 2016 by Women in Motion and was created in part through the Triskelion Arts Space Subsidy Program made possible with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and through the generous support of Dragon's Egg Studio.

Molly McGrath and Shawn Brush are choreographers based in NYC who collaborate under the group Brush/Mcgrath (works). The pair co-choreographs to create dance works which deliver high energy movement based deeply in scores developed by research into abstract concepts. Through this they aim to make these concepts accessible and relatable on a purely kinetic level. McGrath and Brush have shown their work at NY venues such as Judson Memorial Church, Triskelion Arts, and Dixon Place, and at an art gallery at Mason Gross School of the Arts in NJ.

Brynne Billingsley & Artists, a NYC based contemporary dance company, creates movement landscapes that blend the visual appeal of an abstract painting with the visceral experience of a storm or a sunset. BB&A is interested in portraying the inevitability of change, and its effect on nature, relationships, and form. On stage, on site, and in film, they create environmental works which invite audiences to experience dance as it mirrors the natural world. BB&A has been presented by Women in Motion, Red Bean Studios, and Triskelion Arts and has shown work in NYC at The West End Theater in the Soaking WET Festival, Center for Performance Research, The Chashama Gallery in Times Square, The NYU Skirball Center, the Dumbo Dance Festival, Joyce Soho in the Performance Mix Festival, Northside Festival, and on rooftops and in lofts, parks, forests, and seaside.

FERTILE GROUND has supported the emerging and established artists' community for 12 seasons, showcasing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. The non-curated program features five dance makers each evening and includes a post-performance discussion with wine, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.
