Multi-Grammy winner Debby Boone will light up the Berkshires this summer in Barrington Stage Company's production of "The Human Comedy," running from June 24 through July 16, at The Boland Theatre at the Koussevitzky Arts Center at Berkshire Community College.
Boone will take on the role of Mrs. Kate Macauley in Galt MacDermot and William Dumaresq's musical, based on William Saroyan's award-winning screenplay and novel. Humorous yet poignant, "The Human Comedy" is the sung-through musical coming-of-age tale of Homer Macauley, a telegraph messenger who becomes a witness to the sorrows and joys of a small California town during World War II.
The cast includes Bobby List (a recent graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music) as Homer, Eamon Foley, Morgan James, Doug Kreeger (Off-Broadway's "Thrill Me"), Jim Ambler ("Footloose"), Adam Sansiveri, Megan Lewis ("Forbidden Broadway: Special Victims Unit"), Cheryl Freeman ("The Who's Tommy"), Donald Grody ("Caroline or Change"), Molly Sorohan, Andre Garner, Keira O'Neill, Kimberly Cuellar, Robb Sherman, Colin Cunliffe, Matthew Erlbach and Lori Brooke Cohan.
Debby Boone rocketed to stardom in 1977 when "You Light Up My Life" became an overnight hit. The tune, which outranked even The Beatles by claiming the #1 spot on the Billboard charts for ten straight weeks, sold in excess of four million copies, with the album going platinum. The song went on to win an Academy Award for Best Song in a Motion Picture, and Debby received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of the Year. Since her remarkable entrée into the music industry, she has won two additional Grammy Awards and has received seven Grammy nominations.
In addition to her recording career, Debby has starred in numerous stage productions, such as "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" on Broadway and as Maria in Lincoln Center's 30th Anniversary production of "The Sound of Music," in which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination. She also starred as Rizzo in the Broadway revival of "Grease," and toured nationally in "Meet Me in St. Louis."
Most recently, Debby performed the role of Anna in the 50th Anniversary staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I" and Guinevere in North Carolina Theater's "Camelot." Last fall, Debby made her Feinstein's at the Regency debut to critical acclaim for her latest CD "Reflections of Rosemary," a loving tribute celebrating her mother-in-law, Rosemary Clooney. She is the daughter of singer and 1950s heartthrob Pat Boone.
BSC Artistic Director Julianne Boyd is directing, and reunites her creative team from last season's widely acclaimed "Follies" – choreographer Lara Teeter, music director Darren Cohen, costume designer Alejo Vietti, and lighting designer Scott Pinkney. Joining the BSC design team is legendary scenic designer Karl Eigsti.
