Gotham Arts Exchange Presents WORKING WOMEN at The Joyce, 1/30-2/3

WORKING WOMEN, a program of work by female choreographers including Kate Weare, Camille A. Brown, Carolyn Dorfman, and Monica Bill Barnes, comes to The Joyce for a four performance run of new works and audience favorites from January 30 - February 3, 2013. Performances are on Wednesday at 7:30pm; Friday at 8pm; Sunday at 2pm and 7:30pm. The Friday performance will be followed by a Dance Chat. Tickets are $10-39 and are available at www.joyce.org.

After a one-night only concert during last summer's Gotham Dance Festival, WORKING WOMEN returns to The Joyce for an expanded four-performance run that features work created by some of America's most beloved female choreographers. Presented by Gotham Arts Exchange, the program features new works and audience favorites by Kate Weare (The Light Has Not the Arms to Carry Us); Camille A. Brown (solo from Mr. Tol E. Rance); Carolyn Dorfman (Keystone); Monica Bill Barnes (Luster); BODYTRAFFIC performing a work commissioned from Zoe Scofield; and a special performance of Janis Brenner's Contents May Have Shifted performed by Holley Farmer. Also included are premieres by Loni Landon and Jane Comfort.

Founded in 2007 by Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, BODYTRAFFIC is a Los Angeles-based repertory company that commissions today's most distinctive choreographers. Current repertory includes works by Stijn Celis, Sarah Elgart, Alex Ketley, Barak Marshall, Andrea Miller, Richard Siegal, and Guy Weizman & Roni Haver. They has performed at numerous venues in Los Angeles, including Brand Library, The Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater, The Broad Stage, Ford Amphitheatre, Glorya Kaufman Hall at UCLA, Luckman Fine Arts Complex, REDCAT, and Wadsworth Theatre. Outside LA, the company has performed at Rialto Center for the Arts, Duncan Theatre, Z Space, ODC Theater, and at the Chutzpah! and Laguna Dance Festivals. In June 2012, BODYTRAFFIC made their Joyce Theater debut during Gotham Dance Festival. In 2012, they made their Walt Disney Concert Hall debut, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. BODYTRAFFIC, in collaboration with Barak Marshall, had the honor of winning first prize at The A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2011: Los Angeles. BODYTRAFFIC will have their debut at Jacob's Pillow this summer. BODYTRAFFIC provides a wide range of training opportunities for both pre-professional and working dancers through open company classes and workshops. The company's work explores typical, real life situations ranging from literal relationships to more complex themes with an eye on the past and present. Making a personal claim on history, through the lens of a modern female perspective, Camille A. Brown leads her dancers through dazzling excavations of ancestral stories, both timeless and traditional, as well as immediate contemporary issues. The work is strongly character based, expressing whatever the topic is by building from little moments, modeling a filmic sensibility. Celebrating its 30th season the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company is dedicated to the creation of contemporary dance that reveals the individual uniqueness and ultimate commonality of the human experience. With bold athleticism and dramatic nuance, Dorfman's works takes viewers on intellectual and emotional journeys. CDDC's 10 member company appears at major theaters, universities and schools regionally, nationally and internationally.
