Beginning May 24, The George Gee 17-piece Big Band will begin a weekly Monday night engagement at Harlem's newest hotspot – Gospel Uptown/GU LIVE! (Located at 2110 Seventh Avenue @ 125th Street). Featuring jazz and blues vocalist John Dokes (in the style of Joe Williams and Billy Eckstine), George Gee and his big band orchestra pay tribute to the swingin' music of Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Chick Webb and many other Savoy Ballroom jazz icons. This marks the return of regular Big Band Jazz to Uptown NYC after a long hiatus.
After a recent successful presentation by Jazzmobile, bandleader George Gee and GU LIVE! Opened discussions about bringing George's popular musical group to the centrally located GU LIVE! which offers a supper club atmosphere – featuring a full bar and menu, and a wooden dance floor.
The George Gee Big Band has been in a swing-fest for over 30 years. The 17-piece big band has performed for many of the top names in the music industry including multi-Grammy Award winner Quincy Jones and jazz music giant Frank Foster. The band has performed for the Prince of Jordan in Amman, Jordan, appeared on PBS "Live at Lincoln Center" for 11 million viewers, and performed for audiences from Zurich to Tokyo, at The World Famous Apollo Theater and "Savoy Sundays" shows for the New York Swing Dance Society. Recent highlights include headlining at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing, and spotlighted on Entertainment Tonight.
Performances are every Monday from 8pm to 11pm beginning May 24th. Doors open at 6pm. $15 music charge is requested with a $20 table minimum or a $10 minimum at the bar.
