Norwalk, CT

From April 24 through 26, runners from across the country will compete against one another without actually meeting in the some location.

Gone For a Run, a running merchandise store that sells everything from running apparel to personalized running jewelry, is hosting a truly unique event in late April. Why is it unique? Because it is online.

The "Log Off Shut Down Go Run Virtual 10K" event allows users to run the 10K race (which is approximately 6.2 miles) anywhere in the country within a given timeframe. The participants then submit their times online on Gone For a Run's social media pages (Facebook.com/goneforarun). All participants who sign up must run within a given timeframe as assigned by Gone For a Run's website.

There are several timeframes to choose from, so runners can participate in the race in a way that fits their schedule.

The "Log Off Shut Down Go Run Virtual 10K" event is the first of what Gone For a Run hopes to be many virtual races. A relatively new concept, virtual races allow runners from different parts of the country to compete with one another without having to physically be with each other.

Ryan Lynn, the company's director of marketing, says Gone For a Run is organizing these events in order to bring runners closer together using the power and reach of the World Wide Web.

"We decided to start doing this because we wanted to host an event that would tie our running community together," Lynn said. "We wanted an event that everyone could participate in that would have that nice community feeling and runner's can earn the same great medals and prizes as traditional road races."

Gone For a Run will also encourage the runners to post their times and recap photos on its Facebook page. In addition to the racing shirt, medal, and race bib every participant will receive, Gone For a Run also entered every participant into a raffle. Some of the prizes include a bib folio race bib album package, medal boards and hooks for displaying racing medals, running beach towels, running decorative pillows, and other running merchandise.

Registration runs now through April 14, 2015. Registration costs $30. The complimentary racing shirt, medal, and race bib will be shipped before the race.

"We're very excited to get the feedback from our customers," Lynn said.
