It could be magic in the making for Glenn Close at the English National Opera next spring.
The Daily Mail writes that the Tony-winning star, who originated the role of 'Norma Desmond' in Broadway's SUNSET BOULEVARD, could reprise the iconic part in a limited run of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical at ENO either next year or in 2017.
The production would be part of ENO's new musical theatre series, which kicked off in March with SWEENEY TODD, starring Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel. That show started off in concert with the New York Philharmonic, so here's to hoping SUNSET BOULEVARD will make its way to the U.S., too!
The rights have yet to be negotiated, but BWW will let you know as soon as we hear anything official. Writers Don Black and Christopher Hampton will reportedly revise the book if everything gets the go-ahead.
Based on Billy Wilder's 1950 Oscar-winning film, the musical features book & lyrics by Black & Hampton and music by Lloyd Webber. The plot centers on Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. When young screenwriter Joe Gillis accidentally crosses her path, she sees in him an opportunity to make her comeback to the big screen. Patti LuPone created the role in the show's 1993 London run before it headed to the Great White Way the following year.
Close most recently starred on Broadway in A DELICATE BALANCE. Among her other credits are THE PLAY WHAT I WROTE, DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, BENEFACTORS, THE REAL THING, BARNUM and more.
