Finales of musicals wrap great stories up in wondrous melody: sometimes in great joy and rapture and sometimes in heartbreaking reality. The finale of GLEE will I'm sure be no different, and I wouldn't want it to be anything less than a mix of the joy and the sadness. I never dreamed that I would get the chance to write for BroadwayWorld or any professional website, so when I first got offered the position in season two, I wasn't sure if I would be any good at it. In that moment, I felt kind of circa Season 1 New Directions - an underdog aiming to make something special happen. I can't say for sure how good I've been at this, but I've enjoyed having this place, having this moment and sharing it with however many people have read these ridiculous recaps week to week for five years.
Tonight will not doubt be the hardest recap I've ever had to write, and there will certainly be tears (you can ask anyone who really knows me how I can cry at the drop of a hat - literally). But, while there will be tears, there will also be the reminder of what GLEE has given us all over the six season it has run. We've all felt like underdogs in life, and this show was about the underdogs who overcame so many things to find their joy, their GLEE in the world. GLEE has always been at its heart something special, and I'm so proud to have in some very small fraction been able to be part of that something special. "..Because, being apart of something special makes you special, right?" -- Rachel Berry.
I thank all of you who have been a part of this journey we've been on together, and I hope you've had fun reading along as I spazzed, cried, and so much more. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and I thank BroadwayWorld for allowing me to keep doing this over the course of years and not kicking me to the curb like last year's head Warbler.
Last week, the New-New Directions/Warblers won Sectionals in heroic glory, the former GLEE club members began to stretch out back into the world, and here we stand now - the final chapter about to begin. Join me one last time in the choir room, and share in one last song.
8:00pm: Holy flashback! It's 2009 all over again and Kurt is back to struggling and Will is still married to Terri.
8:02pm: Emma is looking out for Kurt by getting Burt in on what is up with Kurt and how he is very depressed. Burt confronts Kurt about being lonely and demands him to join a team or forfeit his sewing machine.
8:05pm: Hummel meets Berry for the first time and of course they have to belt out "Popular" from WICKED. I've been dreaming of this the beginning.
8:09pm: Kurt gets real talk from Rachel and gets his inner diva started with Mercedes. The friendships are beginning, and Kurt nails his audition and goes to tell his dad that he joined a team, which Burt is not sold on, but still happy to see Kurt happy.
8:15pm: Mercedes is giving us real fierceness as she prepares for her glee club audition, while Rachel is her usual self. Also, Hey Matt Rutherford! Rachel asks to come to Mercedes' church and Mercedes sangs for Jesus!
8:20pm: Mercedes and Rachel have begun their feud while Artie and Tina get their cute on as besties while Artie has a crush on Tina. The weirdos dare Tina and Artie to audition for glee club, after pasta attacking Rachel and Kurt.
8:25pm: The audition flashbacks are everything as Tina sings out "I Kissed A Girl" and Artie watches totally taken with her. Artie lets his swag fly as he sings "Pony" by Ginuwine.
8:28pm: First glee club meeting and the drama is flowing from Rachel as she demands her solos! The season one feels!
8:30pm: Terri and her psychic ways were on the money about glee club and the impact it would have, but she was also psycho, so.
8:34pm: Ooh, that slushie realness as Rachel takes it to the face, before landing the solo upsetting Mercedes. Upset about not getting the solo, Mercedes gets a heart to heart with her mother.
8:37pm: Sue is nervous about the glee club but Figgins assures her that glee club isn't here to stay like Myspace and Blockbuster. Sue and Will begin their rivalry as Sue threatens Will for the first time.
8:44pm: Rachel and her MySpace - God, 2009! Remember the MySpace days?
8:46pm: Terri is just as crazy in retrospect and Rachel is not having any of her crap, but we all know Terri doesn't listen. Oh hey Howard Bamboo!
8:49pm: Mercedes and Kurt talk Finn at the Lima Bean, while their crushes linger in the air as a handsome Warbler named Blaine and a fellows Warbler lingers in the background.
8:53pm: The original glee clubbers realize that Finn needs them in a way they didn't realize and Rachel hits all the feels with her talk of glee club's future and what it could be. Emma goes to the mat for Will, and their relationship begins to form. Sue is Sue as she finds out Will is leaving, while Will struggles to choose his path. Suddenly, he hears "Don't Stop Believin". The rest is history or Gleestory.
9:01pm: We rejoin the present as The New Directions at Nationals, Will remembers his nationals experience. The New Directions win Nationals. Will is shocked when the superintendent decides to make McKinley an arts school and has Will be principal. On his first day, Will gets a pep talk from Emma and feels good about his first day. All of the alumni welcome Will to McKinley as he starts his plan for the future with multiple glee clubs. Will bids the alumni farewell with "Teach Your Children".
9:13pm: Blaine and Sam chat about the future and Blaine urges him to not waste his talents, but Sam assures him that will not be happening. Sam is the new head of the New Directions, and it's off to a Sam start but in the best way.
9:15pm: Mercedes announces that she is going on tour opening for Beyoncé and shares a special goodbye with "Someday" by Diana Ross.
9:24pm: Kurt and Blaine thank Sue for getting them back together and in her own way thanks Kurt for being him and teaching her a lot, and she gives Blaine her usual sass, but maybe some respect. Sue and Becky make up in the hallway before concedes to Will with "The Winner Takes It All" in her usual way.
9:30pm: In a five year flash forward, we see Sue has been elected Vice President, and plans to run for president. Kurt shows off his time capsule to Blaine, and their love flourishes five years in the future leading to Broadway success as they pass along their message of love and acceptance to the next generation with "Daydream Believer".
9:42pm: Rachel sings her last solo "This Time" and says that despite leaving, the time shared will be in her heart forever. Five years later, the gang gets together as if things never changed, as Rachel is suggorate to Kurt and Blaine, while Rachel attends the Tonys with her husband, Jesse St. James and wins for her performance! Rachel takes the stage and shares her heart and thanks Mr. Schue for always believing in her.
9:53pm: Sue comes back to McKinley and dedlcates the auditorium of McKinley in Finn's name and introduces the New Directions - current and former members who perform "I Live". The lights dim as the song fades, and I am hysterically.
Thank you, Glee. THANK YOU.
