Alright, Gleeks - do you live for the applause or do you want us to hear you roar? Well, Gleeks, it's time to answer the age old question - are you a Katy or a Gaga? Are you teenage dreaming tonight or are all you all about the fame? Tonight, Glee roars back with a dash of Prism and a pop of ArtPop - oh, and some dude named Adam Lambert is guest starring. Like anyone knows who he is, right? Be prepared to pick a side, Gleeks - it's on Katy Kats (or are you Katy Tigers?) and Little Monsters!
After finding out about competing against Throat Explosion for Nationals, the New Directions are challenged by Mr. Schue to channel their inner Gagas and Katy Perrys to really bring it to the Throat Explosion level. Kurt is pushing forward with his band idea, and recruits Dani and Santana, but Rachel is more focused on Funny Girl and trying to move on after Finn's passing. Sam finds that he and his crush Penny are pretty different - Skrillex and True Jackson VP don't exactly mesh, but deciding to channel his inner Gaga, Sam is determined to make himself less a Katy, more of a Gaga for his lady. Artie and Kitty continue to adjust to life as couple, while Becky taunts away about Artie being her sloppy seconds. Kurt's auditions for his new band don't go over too well when a scene stealing star named Star Child (Adam Lambert) brings a little "Marry The Night" and leaves Kurt green with envy. Queen Gaga Hummel may have just been out Gagaed - oh snap!
Bree is called to Principal Sue and checks in with her about her plan to split up Marley and Jake, and Sue is ready to get up to her usual tricks. Jake is tired of the usual types of dates with Marley and sort of calls her out for being way too Katy to be a Gaga. Sam is determined to show off to Penny, but his recruits aren't exactly on the same level. Sam turns to Becky to get the word about his Gaga-performance, while Rachel confronts Kurt about turning down Star Child; Kurt is determined to be successful so Rachel gives him some food for thought. Bree begins to stir the Jarley waters, and Marley isn't the wiser, while Sam's attempt to tease the audience for his Gaga performance falls flat, but Sam turns the beat around and gets Penny to come to the performance.
The Gagas meet to work out ideas, but it becomes clear that Jake is falling into Bree's trap, which is why Unique brings it to Marley's attention and sends her into freak out mode about how to be a Gaga when she's clearly a Katy. When the Katys bring on the "Applause", Marley seems to have missed the mark when she enters dressed like classic Katy Perry, which gets her suspended for not being able to overcome her own personal issues to be the inner Gaga she can be. After the performance of the Katys, the Gagas battle to figure out what direction to go in, and find they need to strip it down and channel Katy's girl next door sweetness. Elliot Gilbert (also known as Star Child) stalks Kurt at the Spotlight Diner and they have a little talk, during which Kurt offers Elliot the chance to join his band. When Sam visits Penny, he finds that he and Penny are total Katys, leading to them geeking out over being total Katys before ending up making out - hey, Katy would approve of that Hummingbird Heartbeat.
The Gagas perform a strip down version of "Wide Awake" while Sam and Penny get a little snuggly in the audience. Senny? Pam? Ship name for these two, stat! Jake comforts Marley after being suspended, and invites Marley over for a little Mary Poppins and make outs. When Marley stops a heated make out session, Jake gets upset when Marley can't withstand the pressure of being the girl she isn't. After the fight with Marley, Jake approaches Bree for a little "private" time, an offer the new Cheerio bee graciously accepts.
The newly formed Kurt Hummel band try and come up with a name but can't seem to be able to come up with one. When Rachel tosses out the name Pamela Lansbury, the group jumps at it, and Kurt pesters Rachel to join, which she finally does. When Throat Explosion declares Gaga War by deciding to do Applause at Nationals, Mr. Schue gives the New Directions his usual up with togetherness speech - planned or usual Mr. Schue improve? Your guess is good as ours. Sue suspends the New Directions for their disregard for the school dress code, but despite it all Mr. Schue (and the New Directions) won't got quietly. No, they want you to hear them "Roar". Meanwhile, Pamela Lansbury channels their Katy Perry roaring in New York. Marley and Bree hear the roar and show up, leaving Jake thrown, but Katys (and Gagas) do not stop roaring for no one.
Did we hear your roar, Gleeks or do you live for the applause. Display your Katy/Gaganess, and I'll see you next week. Be prepared - it's TWERKING TIME.
