Giona Appointed Assosciate Director at New Museum

Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director, today announced the appointment of Massimiliano Gioni to the new position of Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions. In this role, Gioni will oversee
and direct the institution's exhibition program and lead the curatorial department; assume responsibility for the management of the curatorial staff; and further define programmatic direction as the New Museum continues its growth and evolution.

Gioni has worked with the New Museum for the past four years, organizing such critically acclaimed and widely attended exhibitions as "After Nature" and "Urs Fischer: Marguerite De Ponty," as well as
taking the lead role in organizing the landmark triennial survey, "The Generational: Younger Than Jesus". Most recently he served as Artistic Director of the 8th Gwangju Biennale, which has received international acclaim as an exhibition that demonstrates "what a Biennial can and
should mean today", and "stunning in its strength and clarity".

Phillips said: "Massimiliano Gioni is an exceptional curator whose extraordinary energy and distinctive global perspective will bring much to a program that is continually evolving in response to the art of our times." About his new appointment, Gioni said: "It is a great honor to contribute to shaping an institution that since its founding has transformed the very definition of what a contemporary art museum can be. many great artists to keep the Museum always New."

Phillips also announced that Richard Flood, who has served as the Museum's Chief Curator for the past five years, will assume a new post as Director of Special Projects and Curator at Large. A multi-talented and respected leader in the art world, Flood played a crucial role in helping to assemble the museum's curatorial team, plan for a brand new facility, and develop the opening programs for the SANAA building on the Bowery. Flood will now focus on expanding and strengthening international partnerships, forging new types of public programs, and
building new platforms for discussion. He will also continue to organize special exhibitions.
