About Shockheaded Peter The 2002 Olivier Award-winner for "Best Entertainment," Shockheaded Peter recently kicked off an open-ended run at off-Broadway's Little Shubert Theatre (422 West 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Aves). Previews began on February 11th and the show officially opened to rave reviews on Tuesday, February 22nd. Tickets can be purchased by calling Tele-Charge at 212-239-6200. In the spirit of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey comes this hilariously gruesome and wildly acclaimed musical staging of the classic 19th Century children's book Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter). Deliciously morbid, occasionally chilling, and entirely unique, Shockheaded Peter illuminates Heinrich Hoffman's cautionary tales and his horrible cast of disobedient children with a whimsical combination of music, puppetry, and Victorian melodrama. Young Harriett and her pyrotechnic tendencies, little Conrad and his insatiable thumb-sucking, and a handful of other misbehaving youngsters all come to untimely and gleefully gory ends in this acclaimed British import.
Featuring 11 original songs written by Martyn Jacques of the musical trio The Tiger Lillies, Shockheaded Peter premiered in New York City for a strictly limited engagement at the New Victory Theatre in October, 1999, where it was nominated for three Drama Desk Awards: Unique Theatrical Experience, Outstanding Costumes for a Musical, and Outstanding Set Design. It has toured to various cities in the U.S., including Washington, D.C., Seattle, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.Shockheaded Peter was originally produced by Cultural Industry in collaboration with West Yorkshire Playhouse and Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. The show first premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 1998 and subsequently enjoyed three sold-out return engagements at London's Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, as well as an acclaimed run at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End, where it received the 2002 Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment and Best Supporting Actor in a Musical (Martyn Jacques). The production also received Olivier Award nominations for Best Direction and Best Set and Costume Design; the TMA Best Director Award; the Critics Circle Best Designer Award; and a South Bank Show Theatre Award nomination. Shockheaded Peter has toured internationally to Australia, Finland, Austria, Sweden, New Zealand, Israel, Denmark, and Germany, among others.
