POLKADOTS: The Cool Kids Musical, a new musical celebrating the diversity among children, will have a private industry reading Friday August 28th in New York City. Creator Douglas Lyons (Five Points: An American Musical) is the show's lyricist and co-composed the score alongside Greg Borowsky (Sony ATV). The book is by Melvin Tunstall III.
Directed by Amy Anders Corcoran, the cast features Gerard Canonico (Spring Awakening) as Sky Square, Brittney Johnson (Beautiful) as Lily Polkadot, Talia Thiesfield (HBO's "Veep") as Penelope Square and Sara King (HAIR) as Ms. Square/Mama Square.
POLKADOTS: the Cool Kids Musical, according to press notes, "follows 8-year-old Lily Polkadot who's just moved to the 'Squares Only' small town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot in an all-Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of gaining acceptance from her peers. From daily bullying to segregated drinking fountains, Lily's quest seems hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polka dot skin blooms into an unexpected pal-ship. Inspired by the events of The Little Rock 9, POLKADOTS: the Cool Kids Musical serves as a colorful history lesson for children, reminding them that our individual differences make us awesome, not outcasts."
Madeline Smith is the reading's music director, with Ethan Pakchar is featured on guitar and David Cornejo on cajone.
