Galerie Lelong at Art Basel Miami Beach

Galerie Lelong New York and Paris will feature program highlights for Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 including work by new gallery artist Zilia Sánchez, a selection of pastels by Sean Scully in Art Kabinett, and a new outdoor sculpture by Ursula von Rydingsvard as part of Art Public. Having been one of the early supporters of Latin American art, Galerie Lelong will exhibit work of some of the region's most vital figures including Alfredo Jaar, Cildo Meireles, Ana Mendieta, and Hélio Oiticica. Also on view will be artists spanning generations and continents including Petah Coyne, Günther Förg, Lin Tianmiao, David Nash, Emilio Perez, Jaume Plensa, Kate Shepherd, and Kiki Smith.

For Art Kabinett the gallery presents pastels by Sean Scully. This small survey of Scully's pastels on paper provides an intimate view of the artist's expansion and expression of light, form, and color in works spanning the last thirty years. One of the most significant abstract artists in contemporary art, Scully employs rigorous compositions of horizontals and verticals, fields of rich hues, and a subtle balance of luminosity and shadow. The duality of structure and sensuality is an essential element for Scully, and it is with the artist's pastels that the delicate line between rationalism and romanticism is seamlessly drawn.

Ursula von Rydingsvard's new sculpture lub te? is featured in this year's edition of Art Public. lub te? is created specifically for the outdoors in cedar, with graphite scoured into the surface. Von Rydingsvard transforms this unforgiving and dense material into an elegant expression of movement and gesture, juxtaposing the organic and the hand-built, a recurring theme in her work. In April 2014 the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Breton, England, will open a large-scale survey of von Rydingsvard's work.

lub te?, 2013

Petah Coyne began creating Untitled #1093 (Buddha Boy) just after September 11, 2001. Inspired by the solidarity of New York City amidst the destruction and the multitude of personal shrines on the city's streets, this shrouded female face surrounded by dripping wax, flowers, and pearls represents beauty growing out of darkness, peace evolving from chaos. Coyne's work will be featured in a solo show at Galerie Lelong's booth for ADAA: The Art Show 2014 from March 5 - 9. Untitled #1163 (Homeland) (2002-2004) will be on view in the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma's exhibition of collection highlights in Helsinki, Finland this spring.

Untitled #1093 (Buddha Boy) , 2001-2003

Paintings by German artist Günther Förg will be shown. Frequently compared to the Abstract Masters of the 1950s and 1960s, Förg's works also play with Minimalism with their basic simplicity which has translated into his paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Works by Förg have been shown in important institutions such as the Museo Carlo Bilotti, Rome (2013); Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2009); Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (2006); and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1998). Galerie Lelong Paris will mount a solo show by the artist in the spring of 2014.

Alfredo Jaar's Field, Road, Cloud is a series of photographs taken by Jaar on a journey towards a church in Ntamara, Rwanda, the scene of a brutal massacre of four hundred people. This year Jaar represented Chile in the Venice Biennale with his site-specific presentation, Venezia, Venezia. In addition, his work is currently on view at the Fondazione Merz in Turin, Italy in the exhibition Alfredo Jaar: Abbiamo amato tanto la rivoluzione (We loved it so much, the revolution) and at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, as part of the exhibition NASHER XCHANGE.

Field, Road, Cloud, 1997

A mixed media work on canvas from Lin Tianmiao's Seeing Shadow series will be on view. Lin is one of the first Chinese female artists to achieve international recognition. This year her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai, Shanghai; Tarrawarra Museum of Art, Healesville; and the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, among others. Lin Tianmiao: Est-ce permis? (Est-ce possible?) is currently on view at Galerie Lelong Paris.

Seeing Shadow No. F-13, 2009

Ana Mendieta's Stone Woman depicts a female silhouette formed by small stones, part of a series of works the artist created in sand and stone in Miami where the figures are marked by geometric patterning. Mendieta created another version of this photograph, for which she made a frame out of marble chips, currently on view in Ana Mendieta: Traces at the Hayward Gallery in London. This first comprehensive survey of the artist's work in the United Kingdom is on view through December 15.

Stone Woman (Serie Mujer de Piedra), 1983

New works by Emilio Perez which showcase the artist's unique method of combining painting and drawing will be on view. In January Galerie Lelong New York will open Emilio Perez: Footprints on the Ceiling. Perez's new body of work reveals a departure from previous paintings in the use of a richer, more complex color palette, a more distinct figuration, and expanded negative space.

The Messenger's Song, 2013

A stainless steel sculpture by Jaume Plensa will be shown. Like many of Plensa's figural sculptures located in public places all over the world, Storm is formed out of letters from world alphabets. Currently on view at Galerie Lelong New York is Jaume Plensa: Talking Continents. Earlier this year Plensa presented eleven large works throughout public spaces in Bordeaux, France for the exhibition Jaume Plensa in Bordeaux. The city of Bordeaux has initiated a public funding effort to keep one of the sculptures in the city.

Storm, 2013

Paintings by new gallery artist Zilia Sánchez will be on view. Since the 1950s, Sánchez's unique approach to formal abstraction in her paintings and drawings has rarely been seen outside of Puerto Rico. Following her first U.S. survey earlier this year at Artists Space in New York, Sánchez was called "one of the year's high points, a revelation and a refreshment" by Holland Cotter of the New York Times. The artist resides in Puerto Rico.

Lunar V (Moon V), c. 1973

Works on paper will be shown by Kiki Smith. Smith's work explores the world of fairy tales, feminism, spirituality, nature, and the body. This summer Smith was one of five female artists featured in the highly talked about exhibition Les Papesses at the Collection Lambert, Avignon, France. In recent years she has had solo shows at museums in San Francisco, Houston, Minneapolis, and New York. A show of new works is scheduled to be presented at Galerie Lelong Paris in the fall of 2014.
