Experience the World Premiere of THE RIME, a captivating one man theatricalization of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem featuring Gabriel Portuondo: Monday, September 22 at 7:30 PM, Theatre Row, 410 W. 42nd Street, NYC, as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival.
A supernatural tale of redemption written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, published in 1798, comes to life in Gabriel Portuondo's gripping solo performance. Gabriel has been crafting this epic tale through four years of workshops, from 2010 - 2014, and this will be THE RIME's World Premiere.
THE RIME's poetry is filled with mesmerizing imagery; spirits, zombies, sea monsters and angels. The infamous Albatross, a symbol of good luck to sailors, is shot by the Mariner with his crossbow and in a tormented rage, his shipmates hang the great sea bird around the Mariner's neck, a heavy burden of his guilt. This prompts the wrath of spirits, a visit by Death and his consort on a skeletal hull of a ship, and a deadly game of dice for the souls at sea. The Mariner's miraculous journey continues through darkness, desperation, forgiveness, love and enlightenment -- an epic experience and cherished tale.
