GALLIM Premieres New Work At The Met Breuer 5/18-24 ImageThe 2017-18 MetLiveArts Artist in Residence, the groundbreaking choreographer and artistic director Andrea Miller of GALLIM, closes her year-long residency with six days of a performative installation in the three gallery spaces of The Met Breuer. In collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Ben Stamper, composer Will Epstein, and fashion designer Jose Solis, GALLIM's dancers take over the Museum's fifth floor in the world premiere of (C)arbon, a work on the phenomenon of the body. Each of the three gallery spaces is dedicated to a distinct perspective on the anthropology of the body-as individuals, in dual relationships and in the social mass. (C)arbon can be experienced alongside the exhibition, Like Life: Sculpture, Color, and the Body at The Met Breuer.

Known for a radical use of the whole body -even fingertips, chins and guts- as a device of expression, Miller's movement language is physically powerful, emotionally vulnerable, raw and deeply grounded in human experience and uncertainties. "I am fascinated by the phenomenon of the human body and its mostly elusive and invisible engines: its biology, its chemistry, its emotions, its history, its culture and its inhabiting will and spirits," explains Miller. (C)arbon is rooted in the belief that the human body contains and retains individual and collective experiences and existential trajectories, beyond the arrangement of anatomical parts. Some of the most universal of human contingencies are woven into (C)arbon through movement, video, sound design: "I hope to both unsettle and relieve our concerns of the human body and it's quotidian and epic journey and potential".

Marking Miller's first durational work for a museum, (C)arbon rotates six of her tenacious dancers in the three galleries over six days. Audiences can get a behind-the-scenes look at Miller's creative process during open rehearsals, held May 8-13, 15-17 during Museum hours.

Miller is the first choreographer to be named Artist in Residence at The Met. Throughout her yearlong exploration of the collection and galleries, the Museum commissioned new works by this daring choreographer as well as offered visitors and audiences the chance to see into her creative process through open rehearsals during Museum hours and workshops. Her Stone Skipping, the first-ever site-specific dance work created for The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing, was described by The New York Times as "excellent, inventive, impressive". Stone Skipping was also named 2017 Best Choreography by Wendy Perron of Dance Magazine who cited it as being "ancient and ultra modern at once."
