Full casting has been announced for the upcoming production of John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim's Assassins, presented at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA from May 30-July 16.
The show's creative team will be the same as the one that led the company's recent staging of
Urinetown to numerous Helen Hayes Awards--including one for director
Joe Calarco.
Assassins "provides a darkly-comic, captivating look at the lives, loves, and
lunacy of nine infamous American assassins — from John Wilkes Booth to
Lee Harvey Oswald to John Hinckley Jr. — who attempted, successfully or
not, to take the lives of American Presidents," according to press notes.
The show will feature a cast of numerous Signature Theatre veterans: Matt Conner (
Nevermore composer,
Pacific Overtures) will play John Hinckley; Erin Driscoll (Helen Hayes Award-winner for
Urinetown) as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Will Gartshore (Helen Hayes Award-winner for
Urinetown, Allegro) as John Wilkes Booth, Peter Joshua (
A Little Night Music) as Giuseppe Zangara; Helen Hayes Award-winner Donna Migliaccio (
Urinetown, Pacific Overtures, Follies) as Sara Jane Moore, Tally Sessions (
Gospel According to Fishman) as Leon Czolgosz; and Stephen Gregory Smith (Helen Hayes Award-winner for
110 in the Shade) as The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald and Daniel Felton (
Pacific Overtures, Side Show). In addition, the show will feature Ethan Ableman and Bradley Bowers (alternating performances as
Billy Moore), Andy Brownstein as Samuel Byck, Mika Duncan as Charles Guiteau, Kathryn Fuller as Emma
Goldman, Steve Tipton as The Proprietor, Doug Bowles, Diego Prieto and Priscilla Cuellar.
Assassins will boast choreography by Karma Camp, musical direction by Jon Kalbfleisch, sets
by James Kronzer, costumes by Anne Kennedy, lighting
by Chris Lee, and sound by Tony Angelini.
Assassins, which features a score by Sondheim and a book by Weidman, originally ran Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizon in 1990-1991. The Roundabout Theatre Company's recent revival of the show, starring
Michael Cerveris,
Marc Kudisch,
Denis O'Hare and others, netted a 2004 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
The first five weeks of
Assassins are sold out. In October, Signature Theatre will move to its new multimillion dollar two-theatre complex in Shirlington,VA;
Into the Woods, directed by Eric Schaeffer, will be the inaugural production there.
