Outstanding graphics and images used in print and television campaigns are essential to effective promotion of Broadway productions. This week From The Archives takes a look at promotional materials from one of Roundabout's most memorable productions: Cabaret.
Two distinct marketing campaigns were created for Cabaret: the iconic image of the Master of Ceremonies peeking through the window of an antique door and images of lead cast members in costume striking sexy "heroin chic" poses. These print campaigns reached wide audiences and helped sustain the six year run of the show (1998-2004). The production staged in two Roundabout's theatres, the Kit Kat Klub at Henry Miller's Theatre (now known as the Stephen Sondheim Theatre) and Studio 54. Check out the Internet Broadway Database for a full listing of the original production cast and crew as well as the replacement cast throughout the run, here: (http://www.ibdb.com/production.php?id=4848 )
Cabaret earned countless Tony Awards® (including best revival of a musical, 1998) and truly was a Broadway sensation (http://www.roundabouttheatre.org/97-98.htm). Much of this is thanks to a successful – and memorable – marketing campaign. Cabaret was a turning point for Roundabout as a company and our archives contain a fabulous collection of materials supporting this historic time. Below are just a few:
