We look forward to welcoming you to the next event in our FRESHLY BREWED series at OPERA America on Sunday, April 17th at 1:00 PM. April's FRESHLY BREWED will feature a reading of the libretti for four short one-act operas, all exploring themes of temptation, currently in development by American Lyric Theater's Resident Artists.
CYCLE (Libretto by Tony Asaro - Score by Clint Borzoni): A Manhattan gay couple struggles in their relationship as they cope with the siren call of anabolic steroids.
ECHO AND HERA (Libretto by Tony Asaro - Score by Christopher Cerrone): Echo and Hera are both tortured in their mutual, unhealthy love of Zeus; throw in a stolen Cupid's arrowhead, and a mortal who has sworn off love forever, and things get a bit crazy on Mount Olympus.
ON THE ORIGIN (Libretto by Rochelle Bright - Score by Justine F. Chen): A steampunk reimagining of Charles Darwin's personal struggle to publish his most controversial book, On the Origin of Species.
SEED (Libretto by David Simpatico - Score by Gerald Cohen): The last survivors of a nuclear holy war that has left the world a barren wasteland, Adam and Evangeline are resigned to be the last man and woman on earth... until a stranger arrives.
The reading will also include a discussion with the composers and librettists exploring the challenges setting these libretti, and the relationship between music, text, and future staging. A light brunch will also be served, providing a wonderful, casual opportunity to meet and get to know the next generation of American operatic writers.
Tickets, which include a light brunch, are available for $15 through SmartTix at http://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?EID=&showCode=FRE47. Advance purchase is required. Due to limited seating capacity at OPERA America, tickets are strictly limited and will not be sold on the day of the event.
OPERA America is located at 330 Seventh Avenue (between 28th and 29th). Doors will open for ticket holders at 12:30 PM. We hope to see you on Sunday, April 17th!
