Free Earth Day Event to Highlight Local Musicians, Organic Food & More 4/25

Teachers College, Columbia University, will host its second annual Rockin' Earth Day Fest! on Sunday, April 25th.

The event, which is open to the public free of charge, runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and includes a full slate of activities for children, as well as opportunities to learn about the environment, purchase sustainable products, sample local and organic foods and drinks, and attend Health and Wellness courses. It will be held in the College's Russell Courtyard, located on the north side of West 120th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam avenues. Entrance is granted on a first come, first serve basis.

The musical line-up includes performances by Elena Vogt (at 11 a.m.), Shanelle Gabriel (at 11:30a.m.), Miguelli (at noon), Ayo Awosika (at 1:15 p.m.), Greg Holden (at 2 p.m.), Autodrone (at 3 p.m.), Shakozoba (at 4 p.m.), and Urban Sun (at 5 p.m.). Musicians are performing to raise money for two non-profit organizations: The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Preservation and Research, and Charity:Water.

The Rockin' Earth Day Fest! was organized by the Go Green Committee of the Teachers College Student Senate.

Other activities include:

Art tables at which children can knit with plastic bags and make sculptures, instruments and clothing from discarded computer parts, scraps of fabric and other found objects;
Workshops on water use and cleanliness by members of East River C.R.E.W. (Community Recreation & Education on the Water), a non-profit advocate for appreciation and stewardship of the New York /New Jersey Harbor Estuary;
A composting and gardening table, including an exhibit on composting, as well as opportunities to plant a flower and take it home;
Organic cotton tee-shirts and tote bags, natural soap, pre-loved clothing, vintage jewelry, handmade dolls, cork earrings, and other cool stuff (for sale);
Organic, natural, and local food and beverages provided by Cafe du Soleil, Gus Grown-up Soda, Raw Soul, Cell-nique, Organic Treats, The Lite Choice, and more;
Health and Wellness Courses, including exercise, yoga, and meditation classes, as well as massages and discussions. Please bring your own mat and/or meditation pillows and be sure to wear comfortable clothing if you plan to attend a health and wellness course;
Interactive displays that explore the many intersections of health and the environment;
A display about Disney's film OCEANS, including posters and contests by Disneynature of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures;
Free gifts and raffles, including Rockin' Earth Day Everyday bracelets, items donated by Seventh Generation, and apples donated by West Side Market.
