Fountain Gallery, located at 702 Ninth Avenue and representing artists with mental illness, previously announced the upcoming opening of Hot in Hell's Kitchen. This group exhibition will be on view from today, July 19 through September 12, 2012, with an Opening Reception tonight, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. Hot in Hell's Kitchen is curated by Carolina Penafiel, Director and founder of Local Project, a non-profit art space located in Long Island City, Queens, which since 2003 has provided a platform for emerging artists.

In the steamy days of summer, when many art galleries are closed until the opening of the fall season, Fountain Gallery presents this show as a tip of the hat to the New York City neighborhood located between 34th and 59th Streets (give or take a few blocks), from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River: The area, now gentrified but still known as "Hell's Kitchen" owing to its rough-and-tumble past, has been home to the Gallery since it opened its doors in 2000. In addition to works referencing Hell's Kitchen by Fountain Gallery artists, this exhibition features pieces by a number of the community volunteers who contribute their time and talents to facilitating the Gallery's activities. Another element of the exhibition: Visitors are invited to participate in a collaborative art piece.

Hot in Hell's Kitchen showcases works in mediums including: oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings; mixed media pieces and collage; pen and ink drawings; and digital photographs.

Fountain Gallery is the premier venue in New York City representing artists with mental illness. Founded by Fountain House in 2000 as a not-for-profit exhibition space for its member-artists living and working with mental illness, the Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists, curators and cultural institutions. Embracing artists who are emerging or established, trained or self-taught, Fountain Gallery cultivates artistic growth and makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community.
