ENCUENTRO NYC Colombian Music Festival, founded by musicians Pablo Mayor and Anna Povich de Mayor is back with Encuentro Underground- Roots, Part 1: An exploration into the Spanish roots of Colombian music, Saturday, November 17, 7pm and 9pm. Celebrating its 14th anniversary, the Festival has found a new home in ID Studio, one of NYC's newest and most vibrant artistic centers in the South Bronx (311 E. 140th St., two blocks from the 6 train). This concert is also part of Latin American Culture Week.
The first of the Encuentro Underground Series features a Noche Flamenca(flamenco night), showing the Spanish roots of Colombian music through the artistic prowess of Rebeca Tomásand her A Palo Seco Flamenco Dance Company, paired with the diverse traditions of Colombia presented by Colombian visionary musicians Pablo Mayor and Gregorio Uribe, the Folklore Urbano NYC Trio and talented dancer and choreographer Daniel Fetecua. The event will take place in the three-floor brownstone and multi-disciplinary art space of ID Studio, the home of Colombian actor German Jaramillo and his theater company, but also the rehearsal and recording studio run by composer and pianist Pablo Mayor, and dancer Daniel Fetecua.
Each set will begin with a pre-concert reception upstairs in the theater space that includes tapas and drink, then will move underground to the downstairs music studio with an intimate live-recorded show. For those who come to Encuentro ready to dance, the second set will follow with a lively dance party to finish the night.
"This year's Encuentro NYC will breathe new life into our way of looking at Colombian music, focusing on opening our arms to the cultures who represent the source from where this music has evolved. In celebrating our multi-culturalism, we become more aware of how we are all connected through music and dance," says co-director and artist Anna Povich de Mayor.
ID Studio has planted its roots in what is now NYC's newest frontier, a neighborhood just across the river from Manhattan, one stop from the Harlem 125th subway station on the 6 line, a 2-block walk in a historic preservation district that is home to a new art world. The beautifully renovated brownstone sits next door to the cutting edge and active Bronx Arts Space, down the block from the public library, and around the corner from the police station, with new art cafes, breweries, and restaurants popping up in the neighborhood. The audience will have the opportunity to be a part of the first live-recorded event in the space, using the music studio's newly inaugurated recording studio.
Rebeca Tomás has been described as "awesomely fiery" (New York Times), "masterful" (Eva Yaa Asentawaa), and "a postcard image of the feminine Flamenco dancer" (Kansas City Metropolis). After years of performing and touring with such companies as Noche Flamenca and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, she founded A Palo Seco Flamenco Company (2010), for which she directs and choreographs her own original productions. An up and coming voice in the U.S. Flamenco community with an artistic vision deeply rooted in Flamenco tradition, yet relevant in a modern urban context, her productions have been proclaimed "a feast for the eyes and the ears" (Theatre Online).
Pablo Mayor is one of the contemporary voices of Colombia outside its borders. Pablo has dedicated the last two decades to writing, producing, and promoting Colombian music in New York City. From Cali, Colombia, Pablo Mayor (B.A., M.A. Jazz Arranging/University of North Texas), formerly Professor of Jazz-Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, has produced three CD's with his band the Folklore Urbano Orchestra and taken the band to both national and international venues. He now works out of the South Bronx, at ID Studio, where he leads the musical segment of Arts Latino NY, a multi-disciplinary alliance of ID Studio Theater and Pajarillo Pinta'o dance company.
Gregorio Uribe holds his degree from Berklee College of Music, where his studies in jazz arranging led him to form a 16-piece band blending Afro-Colombian rhythm with funk grooves and powerful big band arranging. He has shared the stage with such artists as Rubén Blades and Carlos Vives. His first single was featured for four weeks on MTV Tr3s both in the US and in the UK.
Daniel Fetecua, a native of Bogotà, Colombia holds a BFA from Folkwang-Hochschule, Germany, and has appeared as guest artist in Pina Bausch's masterpieces, Rite of Spring and Tannhäuser. Fetecua has also worked with La Fura Dels Baus, Kuo Chu Wu, and won a salsa award in the European Salsa Championship in 2004. He is founder and artistic director of Pajarillo Pinta'o, a dance company that combines Colombian Folklore and Modern Dance, based in New York and Germany. He is co-founder of Arts Latino NY, a multidisciplinary and strategic alliance of Latin arts that unites three influential and recognized Colombian artists, and their companies under one roof in South Bronx, New York
