The first trailer for the new Julian Fellowes-penned adaptation of William Shakespeare's peerless tragic romance Romeo & Juliet has at long last been released - and, what light!
But, soft! Richly costumed and elegantly decorated, the visually splendorous trailer is exultant - well, as enlivened as one can be by a preview for a story ultimately this torurously tragic, that is. Indeed, the bracingly contemporary casting and pronounced paring away of the text may surprise many purists at first glance, but it is a gamble that could well pay off ultimately, judging from the compelling imagery and appropriately moody atmosphere conjured here.
Romeo & Juliet stars Douglas Booth as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet, with a cast also featuring Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Ed Westwick and Natascha McElhone. The film was directed by Carlo Carlei with a script by the aforementioned DOWNTON ABBEY scribe, Fellowes.
Romeo & Juliet is set for a UK premiere in October. No US release date has yet been confirmed.
