This November, as we approach the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Natalie Gershtein (Beautiful City Theatre) produces the final workshop production of THE FALL - BERLIN WALL PROJECT, a multimedia theater performance. This workshop is in preparation for the New York Premiere at La MaMa ETC in 2016 and a European Tour in 2015.
Directed by Simón Hanukai (Birthday Triage, Flying Ace and the Storm of the Century), and written by Anita Kirpalani (Project Manager of Sarajevo Heart of Europe) and Saviana Stanescu (Aliens with Extraordinary Skills) the workshop production of THE FALL will take place at Flamboyán Theater located at The Clemente (107 Suffolk Street) from November 16 - 22, 2014.
THE FALL is a multimedia experience that interconnects poetic narrative, drama, movement, digital projections, live music, visceral soundscapes, and puppetry to explore the 'new' world after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall in late 1989. It takes us on a journey from the once blaring promise of "freedom" sounded by the West, to the ever more divided world of today.
25 years later, a group of multi-ethnic artists create the story of Doru Popescu (Arthur Kriklivy), a young rebel with a noble cause: a world without walls. After the mother of his newborn daughter dies at the Romanian revolution, Doru is launched into a dramatic journey of fatherhood, responsibility and pursuit of freedom. Raising Ana (Chloe Markewich) and surviving the bloody regime of dictator Nicolae Ceau?escu, Doru becomes a journalist for the Free Press, open-heartedly voicing his poetic ideals. Through hybrid forms of artistic expression, the piece weaves together Doru's story, his struggle to connect with his daughter, and his plight against the "wall-builders" - a pair of fantastical administrators (Sanam Erfani and Matt Webster) on a mission to slice up the world by building a multitude of new walls.
As we approach the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall we are once again surrounded by social unrest. From the uprisings of Tunisia to Ukraine, from Syria to Hong Kong, from Egypt to Bosnia-Herzegovina, the discontent is amassing. For many, the promises of freedom and unity that resounded at the end of the Cold War did not come to fruition. For some, the world is more divided and walled apart than ever.
Inspired by director Simón Adinia Hanukai's childhood, growing up in Azerbaijan under communist rule, THE FALL is being devised with a team of international artists. The voices in the piece represent the following countries:
Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, and the USA.
