BroadwayWorld is thrilled to present its latest feature series: The Performer of the Week! Get to know these amazing talents as they share a bit about themselves, their work and life!
Today, we're thrilled to feature Shenandoah Conservatory graduate Ryan Neal Green!
Tell us About Yourself, Ryan!
I was born in Sterling, VA, a town outside of Washington DC. I grew up in the area, attending theatre all around DC and performing in school and local shows. I went to Shenandoah Conservatory, and graduated with his BFA in Musical Theatre in 2012. Now I live in New York City, and I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Favorite roles: Sonny in Grease at Mac-Haydn, Fred Casely in Chicago at Allenberry, Tony in The Boy Friend and The Lover in The Who's Tommy in college.
I'm currently in the ensemble of Mame, and also the understudy for Older Patrick. It's a joint production between Media Theatre and Buck's County Playhouse, and it's featuring Andrea McArdle. It's my first time working at an equity house, and with stars no less, so I'm excited to get to learn by osmosis.
2) What has been your professional biggest accomplishment so far?
I would say that my biggest accomplishment hasn't been booking a specific job, but it's the first six months I spent in the city. I know it sounds cheesy, but I learned a lot, gave very consistent auditions, and received very consistent positive response. It's a huge accomplishment to me to be taking the first steps in your career and be made to feel even more confident in your ability to succeed. It makes me only want to work harder and audition more!
3) Share your funniest or worst audition moment
So there was this national tour I was desperate to be a part of. I managed to convince the casting director to give me an appointment for one of the leads, went in an and auditioned and didn't hear anything. They were having another open call several weeks later, so I figured I would try going in again for the ensemble or something. This is a casting director who I'd know before and had a relationship with, and when she saw me sitting near the audition room she greeted me and casually asked what I was doing there. I responded "You, auditioning for you." She sort of mumbled something noncommittal and walked away. To add to that, when I went in I sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" (not very well might I add) forgetting that she had a young daughter. She then asked if I had sung the song for her kid. Embarrassed, I said yes. God I've never felt like such a kiss-up.
4) What's your dream role?
My two big dream roles are Fabrizio in Light in the Piazza and Matt in The Fantasticks. I'm a sucker for playing the romantic lead! Some people find them boring, but I find falling in love night after night to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Plus, I'm such a sap for a good romantic ballad!
5) If you weren't a performer, what would you be?
I would be an aerospace engineer. No joke. I'm actually probably better at math than I am as a performer, and I've always enjoyed the thought of working for NASA. Build a spaceship, explore a planet. When I applied to colleges, I applied to schools for both musical theatre and engineering, and decided I would only pursue theatre if I got into any of the five colleges I auditioned for. I got into exactly one, and so the decision was made. I honestly couldn't be happier!
6) Where do you see yourself in 5, 10 years?
Still in NYC. With an equity card, playing roles in New York or in regional houses. And with some sort of big Broadway or off-Broadway credit within ten years. I also have an interest in film, and would love to do that on the side. And I hope to do a play or several within that time as well, it's great to be well-rounded!
7) Where can people find you online?
On my website www.ryannealgreen.com and on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/ryannealgreen
