Variety reports that Faith Prince will star as matriarch Aggie Hurley in the new Broadway musical A Catered Affair, Harvey Fierstein and John Bucchino's adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky's story of a Bronx wedding in the 1950s. The show is scheduled to premiere at the Old Globe in San Diego this fall before hitting Broadway in spring 2008. John Doyle (Sweeney Todd, Company) directs.
No other actors have been set, and casting will begin later this month. Rehearsals are scheduled to start in August for a San Diego premiere September 20. The show, which follows a family deciding whether to spend their life savings on the family business or their daughter's wedding, was previously adapted by Gore Vidal into a 1956 film starring Bette Davis and featuring Ernest Borgnine and
Debbie Reynolds.
Prince was recently seen on the Showtimes series "Huff." She will also be seen in the upcoming independent film
Our Very Own, with
Allison Janney and Cheryl Hines, and opposite Hilary and Haily Duff in their feature film
Material Girls. Prince won a Tony for playing Miss Adelaide in the 1992 Broadway revival of
Guys and Dolls, for which she also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. She was nominated for two other Tonys for her portrayal of Ella Peterson in the revival of
Bells Are Ringing and for Jerome Robbins'
Broadway. On television, Prince appeared for five seasons on "Spin City," and has also been seen on "House," "Monk" and "Now and Again." Prince made an award winning cabaret debut at Joe's Pub in New York City, and the live recording. "A Leap Of Faith," is available on DRG Records. She will soon make her London debut in the English National Opera production of
Kismet.
