Following FUN HOME's Best Musical win tonight at the 69th Annual Tony Awards, the producers of the night's big hit spoke with the press backstage - and hinted at a long life for the musical post-Broadway.
As Tony-winning director Sam Gold confirmed earlier in the evening, there's definitely a possibility for a West End transfer of FUN HOME (with discussions initially beginning last year after the show's run at The Public) - but it appears the Bechdels could also make their way to the big screen.
"There's definitely been interest in a film," the producers told reporters. "We just want to do what's best for it."
Another producer added that the team behind FUN HOME is "open to anything."
Before her beloved graphic novel was brought to the stage, Alison Bechdel had been approached about a film adaptation, though insisted theatre might be the better medium - so it could promptly "die" in case things turned out badly.
Kron and Tesori also took home the 2015 Tony Award for Best Original Score of a Musical, making history as the first female writing pair to do so. Kron was also the recipient of the Tony for Best Book of a Musical. Leading man Michael Cerveris was also the recipient of this year's award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
Fun Home, the highly-anticipated, Award-winning American musical, opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre (235 West 50th Street) on April 19th. The show features music by four-time Tony Award nominee Jeanine Tesori, a book and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Lisa Kron and direction by Drama Desk nominee Sam Gold.
Pronounced "a beautiful, heartbreaker of a musical" by the New York Times, Fun Home is the groundbreaking new Broadway musical based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir. Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family - her mother, brothers and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father - that connect with her in surprising new ways. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
The 2015 Tony Awards are in full swing on CBS, co-hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming, and, as usual, BroadwayWorld.com is your one-stop shop for all things Tonys on Tony Day, Night and Beyond!
